The unusual combination of two organists on one instrument is by no means a new idea. As early as the seventeenth century composers were writing pieces for the potential of two players on one instrument, both in terms of complexity of writing and variety of texture. Indeed, many famous composers of music for the ‘King of Instruments’ have turned their hands to writing for the unusual possibilities offered by four feet and twenty fingers! Wesley, Mendelssohn and Merkel and, in more recent times, Langlais, Rutter and Hakim have all explored the potential of this exciting combination.

Both Gareth and Graham firmly believe that organ recitals should always be entertaining and so try to offer a wide range of music in their recitals, mixing ‘standard’ duets with orchestral arrangements they have made. Their repertoire is comprehensive and incorporates all the major works composed for this unusual genre including:

Sonata in D minor Opus 30 - G. Merkel
Variations on O Filii et Filiae - J. Rutter
Fantasie pour Deux Organistes - J. Langlais
Duet Sonata - S. Wesley
Rhapsody for Organ Duet - N. Hakim

In addition, the two performers have arranged many orchestral works in order to show the splendour of the organ off to its full. Examples of these include:

Carmen Suite - G. Bizet
Prelude to Richard III - W. Walton
March to the Scaffold - H. Berlioz
Peer Gynt Suite - E. Grieg
Slavonic Dances - A. Dvorak
Vocalise - S. Rachmaninoff

Also included in their repertoire are all the major works composed for the combination of two players on two organs such as:

Six Concertos for Two Organs - A. Soler
Concerto in G - J. Blanco
Four Duets - C.P.E. Bach
